Hypnotherapists dispel myths of their trade BEING HYPNOTIZED usually conjures visions of someone swinging a pocket watch in front of the pa- tient’s eyes, while repeating the phrase “‘you are getting sleepy.”” By Surj Rattan News Reporter According to North Vancouver hypnotherapists Daniel Rutley and Diane Payette, that vision could not be further from the truth. In fact, says Rutley, the patient is never asleep during hypnosis. Rutley and Payette maintain that there are a lot of common misconceptions about hypnosis, and they add that hypnosis is not dangerous, it is merely a state of mind and a method of thinking. Rutley, who has been a certified clinical hypnotherapist since 1982, and Payette, who is a registered clinical counsellor and a member of the Canadian Society of Clinical Hypnosis, offer a counselling service in North Van- couver for people with problems that range from depression to an inability to quit smoking. Payette says hypnotherapy is a combination of hypnosis and counselling. . “What most people come here for is the hypnosis part. Some people think that hypnosis is something magical or mystical or that the person doing the hypnosis has some kind of power where they will do something to them to help them deal with their prob- lem,”’ says Payette. In fact, she adds, hypnosis is a way to help the patient relax. Payette says that in hypnosis, pa- tients are offered suggestions on ways they can overcome their problems. Rutley adds that relaxation is vital to problem-solving, and hypnosis is one of the better ways to relax. “You don’t go under hyp- nosis,"’ says Rutley. ‘You go under a table or under a chair. The other misconception is when people say, ‘Well, what if I don’t wake up?’ But you’re never asleep to begin with. You can drive a car, make love, play golf, ali in hypnosis, and generally you will! do a better job than normal because hypnosis increases awareness.”” He adds that hypnosis is a lot like meditation. I'll sleep well, [’ll remain full between meals,’ things like that.” Rutley and Payette also frown upon performers such as Revecn and Romane, who come to town offering one-session cures to peo- ple through hypnosis.
