Crist reads Faust “POLITICS IS corrupt and cor- tupting unless you constantly watch and check yourself,’* declared North Vancouver District alderman Ernie Crist. By EVELYN JACOB News Reporter To that end, Crist will ‘‘reflect and recharge his soul’? when he gives a public reading of Goethe's Faust this Sunday, June 3, at Presentation House. The reading will be in English. Goethe began Faust, which takes for its theme the universal experi- ence of the troubled human sou! — but its spiritual values far tran- scend mere satanism and its con- sequences — in his youth and worked on it during the greater part of his life, completing Part Two just weeks prior to his death at age 82. Calling Goethe a ‘‘literary giant” who towered over the writers of his time, Crist, 2 former student of German literature, says Faust should serve as an inspira- tion to all of us, “In this time and age I think it’s important that Faust be repopularized. Goethe had an im- portant message: You can only be happy if you use your talents for the betterment of mankind?’ Prior to the reading the alder- man will speak on the vibrant era of German literature which formed a backdrop to Goethe’s Faust. Goethe, a poet, statesman, theatre director, critic and scien- tist, has been hailed as leader of the Germans in their Romantic Revolution. He was born in 1749 and died in 1832, - This is the second time Crist will read from Faust. The event, beginning at 7:30 p.m. is free, although donations to Presentation House are welcome. 290-1245 VanCity offers the advantage of on-site mortgage arrangements and approvals.
