32 - Sunday, May 28, 1989 - North Shore News LIFESTYLES TENNIS BRACELET NOT FOR. THE COURT Diamonds should only be worn out at night DEAR MISS MANNERS — I recently acquired a “‘tennis bracelet” made of smail matched diamonds set in a flexible band. The idea of dazzling one’s opponent while returning 2 serve seems unsporting. How did such a design get its name? When and where is it correct to wear diamonds in the dayiime? One does make a distinction be- tween diamond stad earrings and “‘chandeliers,’’ between small stones in a pendant and a full parure. But are these distinctions meaningful? And are there dif- ferent rules for colored stones? GENTLE READER — If it were not for its name, and the resulting suggestion for its misuse the “tennis. bracelet’? would te reeking of good taste. poe manners Juditn Martin A simple row of diamonds at the wrist is. understated, as far as wearing diamonds can be said to be understating anything. Wide diamond bracelets, chandelier ear- rings and elaborate necklaces, wom individually or together, re- quire full evening dress, but small bracelets, diamond stud earrings and pendants can be worn with nearly any moderately dressy clothes at the proper time. The proper time is evening. Only engagement and wedding-band diamonds are properly worn in daylight. That rule also goes for rubies, sapphires and emeralds; semiprecious stoncs may be worn during the day. Miss Manners: is aware that many people, including the athlete who inspired the term “tennis bracelet,” and lots of letter-writing jewelers Miss Manners hopes not -j to hear from, believe that dia- everyone, they. shoulda’t have it just for some. Instead they should just have it for themselves after the reception is over. She says this has been done at other wedrlings (which should not justify it as being proper). GENTLE READER — It sure doesn't. The-perversions of hospi- tality being practiced at modern weddings would make your hair curl, Miss Manners trusts. However, this has got to be high among them. If one cannot afford something special for one’s guests, one does not consume that very thing in front of them. Nor does one invite certain people and then demonstrate to them that they are second-class guests. Did the bridegroom have a part in this idea? If not, Miss Manners worries about him. (If se, she only worries about their children.) Anyone’ who has thus demon- strated what her priorities will be when sacrifices must be made is nat a good marriage prospect. cy e Po Capilano College Community Muste School Planning for your child’s Fall musical activities?
