Homes that have been weatherized with extra caulking, - weatherstripping and insulation, and new homes built to tighter standards may have higher indoor moisture levels in winter because less dry air filters in through cracks and less moist interior air escapes. Although humidity is necessary for comfort and health, the moisture level in some homes can be too high, especially if humidifi fiers are running frequently. Too much moisture can cause mildew, moulds, peeling paint or wallpaper and damp insulation. If moisture problems are not cor- Stake vines From page 13 should be put in place now. You may damage the roots of mature plants if you wait until later, as well as running the extra risk of damaging the top growth while ty- ing them up. All ties should be left rather loose to avoid cutting off the plants’ circulation as their stems swell, I recommend using vinyl tape as opposed to paper-covered wire as this will further reduce the risks of damage, Carry on seeding warm-season crops such as snap beans, lima beans, corm, and squash through the rest of the month. Eggplant, peppers, and tomatoes can also be seeded, but better results can be expected with transplants. You should also continue in- terplanting those crops that can be expected to germinate and grow quickly such as radishes, beets, and loose leaf lettuce. * Trees and Shrubs — If you haven’t already done so, feed your trees and shrubs now. If you managed to get the job done in early April, when you were sup- posed to, you should wait until the end of the month. Azaleas, camellias, heather, pieris, rhododendrons, skimmias and other acid loving plants should . be fed with an acid-based fertilizer such as rhododendron and azalea food (surprise, surprise). Use a general purpose fertilizer such as 6-8-6 on most other trees and shrubs, Those of you who have labored long and hard over the last year should now be considering an en- try into this year’s North Shore Garden Contest. - You can find entry forms at the libraries, municipal halls, rec. cen- tres and garden centres. Applica- tions will be accepted until July 31, 1989. I should stress the organizers’ goals and aspirations here. This yearly event is meant to be a fun and inspiring opportunity for the average home gardener on the North Shore to vent his or her pride and show off the fruits of their labors. Signs of excessive moisture in- clude windows that drip; stains or moisture on inside facing walls or on ceilings; moisture beads or frost on wooden surfaces or on insula- tion in an unheated attic.
