The event which runs from 7 to 9 p.m. on Wednes- day, Sept. 14 will feature a talk at 7:30 p.m. on the Montessori method followed by a panel discussion by a group of parents on how the Montessori method has benefitted their children. . The Montessori method is based on the unique educational philosophy of Dr. Maria Montessori, an Italian physictan who had a particular genius for observing children as they really are rather than as adults wish them to be. “Above all, a Montessori school cultivates a child’s own natural desire to learn,’’ says Marie O’Neill, a school board member. ‘‘in an age when there are so many external diversions, distractions and influences, we often forget that learning must come from within. It is not something that can or should be programmed into a child.” Options for volunteers DISCOVER YOUR community by volunteering. The Gatehouse Montessori is located in what used to be Cedardale elementary school, just off Taylor Way, below the Upper Levels. While the preschool is open to children aged 2% to six, admission is limited to those between the ages of 2% to four, ‘‘After this age, certain ‘sensitive periods’ upon which their education is based at Montessori have already passed,’’ O'Neill explains. Attendance is confined to half-day sessions until age five when a full-day program is available. For further information call the school at 925-1437 or 926-7457 in the evening.
