Triathion means added preparation for runner NORTH VANCOUVER | runner Vicki Swan expected to finish the Vancouver Internationa! Triathlon just before noon today, marking another athletic achievement in her three-year running career. While she may finish well behind the top athletes, the insulin-depen- dent diabetic is not worried about coming in first, she will be happy just to finish her 12-kilometre por- tion of the event in a respectable time. Joined by two other racers with insulin-dependent diabetes, Swan Canada loses by one match CANADA CAME out a loser by a Mere one match when it took on The Rest of the World at a West Vancouver Lawn Bowling Club competition recently. While running she carries an orange with her to bolster lagging blood sugar, and carefully coordi- nates her running with time of day and eating habits. ‘‘The spontaneity of ‘Let’s go for a run’ just isn’t there,’’ ex- plains the triathlon newcomer. ‘‘T can do it but I take the chance of getting a few miles out, feeling re- ally tired and having to go back.”’ Last summer, diabetic Greg Corry of Victoria proudly joined the ranks of finishers who com- pleted the gruelling Ironman Triathlon in Penticton.
