IN OUR image-conscious society, the first few grey
hairs a man discovers can be a traumatic experience.

According to a haircare product manufacturer, an
estimated five per cen) of Canadian men 18 years and
older use some form of hair coloring product, and the
number is growing.

Here are some tidbits of grey trivia for men — or
women — who might be discovering their first grey
hairs.

*Haircoloring dates back to the Pharaohs in
Egypt, who used vegetable extracts and metallic com-
pounds to change their hair color.

* Overnight preying, often referred to as rapid
onset of greying, is caused by dark hairs falling out

leaving only white ones behind. Dark hairs do not
grey overnight, and so-called overnight greying occurs
over a period of several weeks.

* Creying patterns are often hereditary.

* Women tend to grey slightly faster than men.

The original hair color has little to do with the
tendency or rate of greying. It’s just thet the greying
of dark-haired persons is more obvious than that of
blondes.

* Premature greying is defined as the onset of grey-
ing before 20 years of age.

* Somewhere between 25 to 30 per cent of persons
start greying by the age of 25; intense acceleration of
greying occurs during the ages of 40 and 50; everyone
has a significant amount of grey hair by the age of 65.
