Two guilty of
shoplifting

TWO NORTH Vancouver residents received a fine and probation
Feb, 29 in West Vancouver provincial court after pleading guilty to
three shoplifting-related charges.

Brian David Fanning, 29, and Rexine Davies, 23, were originally
charged jointly with theft under $1,000 and fraud under $1,000 in
connection with a theft of erystal plates from The Hay and an
alleged attempt to defraud (he department store of an amount of
cash,

. Davies was further charged with possession of stolen property
and theft under $1,000 in connection with an alleged theft of four
pairs of blue jeans from Sears,

Appearing dcfore Judge R.D. Grandison, Fanning pleaded guilty
to theft under $1,000 and was fined $300. Davies pleaded guilty to
theft in connection with the stolen crystal plates and possession of
ihe stolen blue jeans, She received a suspended sentence, was plac-
ed on probation for six months and was ordered to perform 125
hours of community work service within five months.

WV Yacht Club
gets grant

THE WEST Vancouver Yacht Club (WVYC) has been awarded
$13,231 trom the B.C, Lottery Fund ¢o help it launch a new fleet 6f
dinghies. ;

Alvis Marine Ltd. of North Vancouver will build 10 new dinghies
to replace WVYC’s existing dinghies, which are 22 years old.

The contract currently calis for delivery of 10 dinghies over the
next two years and the immediate delivery of three.

The 13-foot dinghies are used by the 650-member club fn its an-
nual summer Learn To Salil program, which, over a six-week
period, trains 120 youths on Canadian Yachting Association stan-

A 33-YEAR-OLD North Vancouver man will appear May 5 for

- trial in North Vancouver provincial court on two charges stemming

from an alleged theft of electricity from B.C, Hydro.

Robert Douglas, Bartlett was originally charged with theft of

electricity and possession of a meter designed to obtain free use of
telecommunications services in.connection with incidents alleged to
have occurred between Oct. 19 and Dec. 19.

THE NORTH Vancouver brarich of an international Norwegian
ship classification company has. been appointed to do the design

..gvaluation on the $350 million Polar Class 8 icebreaker.

“Det norske Veritas won the contract over main competitor
Lioyd’s Register of Britain primarily because of what Veritas’
principal surveyor Olaf Hatien said was the company’s expertise in
the icebreaker field.

“*1q (the contract) will be our biggest in Canada,’ Hatlen said

Under the contract, Norske “‘eritas’ North Vancouver office will
be responsible for evaluating the Polar 8’s design, checking calcu-
lations and vessel inspection during its construction to make sure

’ the icebreaker is being built to specifications.

. The Polar 8, which will be built by North Vancouver’s Versatile
Pacific Shipyards Inc. in its North Vancouver and Victoria yards
starting in mid-1989, will be the largest icebreaker in the world and
one of the most complex ships built in Canada.
