o 4.- Wednesday, October 16 1985 -. North Shore News Lies a father told IT WAS A mistake, I guess, to let our six-year-old boy watch the new Twilight Zone series with us. But we had watched the video of the movie, based on the old stories, about a month before, and there was nothing in it, believe it or not, that seemed to bother him. I take him to movies all the time. E.T. Star Wars. The Last Starfighter. Ghostbusters, Dune. Back to The Future. So he has seen plenty of weird stuff already. So far, it hadn’t affected him. After watching Ghostbusters, for instance, the worst that happened was that he had a vivid dream that night. In it, he reported somberly in the morning, he’d actually caught Santa Claus. But when he opened Santa’s bag, it was all full of presents for his little sister. A real nigittmare for a six-year- old. But this Twilight Zone THE FATE of the 227 surviving chicks seized October 8 from a sta- tion. wagon on East 14th Street in North Vancouver remains uncertain. By TIMOTHY RENSHAW Jeff Lawson, North Van- couver.:SPCA | superintend- ent, said Friday 50 per cent of . those. chicks are in borderline condition at brst. Sixty have been destroyed by the SPCA as being beyond recovery: If proper homes cannot be found for survivors, Lawson said, ‘I’m afraid they are destined to be destroyed. We won’t release these animals for food or as _ hunters’ bait.” Approximately 287 live male chicks were seized by SPCA officers from a sta- tion wagon loaded with a total of 4,200 dead and dy- ing chicks, destined, accor- ding to the station wagon’s owncr, to Gabriola Island to be used as feed for falcons. Martin Lee, 29, explained October 8 that when he bought the chicks from Sanders Hatchery in Ab- botsford, he assumed they were dead. But when he and his common-law wife returned from visiting his grandmother at Lions Gate Hospital, some of the chicks had revived and were strug- gling in the mass of chick carcasses. Lee's pure-bred Labrador retriever, left in the car for the hour the two were in the hospital, was subsequently seized by Lawson under the show was different. If I’'d have known what was com- ing, I’d have shut the TV off. The story revolved arcund a woman who discovered a magic bracelet which allowed her to stop everybody in their tracks, freeze them in time, were all these missiles poised in the sky, so she wouldn't be able to undo her magic without sentencing everyone to doom. After the show, my six- year-old turned to his mother, and asked: ‘‘Can anything destroy the earth besides the sun, Mummy?”’ A couple of years ago, leafing through an old Time/Life picture book about the history of the world, we had spotted a pain- ting depicting the earth on strictly personal by Bob Hunter simply by saying: ‘“‘Shut up!’’ When she told them they could talk again, they all came back to life. So far, so good. But the ending caught me off guard. _ Suddenly, incoming Russian nuclear missiles were about to destroy America. At the last second, she yelled *“*Stop!"’’ It worked, everybody and everything was frozen--except that there prevention of cruelty to animals act. The dog, judged to be in excellent condition by SPCA officials, was released to Lee later the same day. And we had talked all about death, hadn't we? Death is just a matter of shedding your skin and mov- ing on to the next lifetime, I promised. Nothing to worry about. It’s as natural as being born. AS you can see, I have been at some pain to spare the child a Jot of anxiety about death and the end of the world, given that he knows about things dying and given that he saw that picture of the earth on the last day. I also have a rule around the house that we don’t talk about nuclear war. We don’t talk about nuclear winter. We don’t talk about bomb tests. We don't talk about nuclear terrorism or arms talks or any of it. Not when the kids are around.
