WAFs reunited
after 38 years

THIRTY-EIGHT YEARS is
a long time between
reunions.

On Saturday, West Van-
couver residents, Beryl
Waterman and Pat Haveruk,
got together with Lorna
Waight and Sheila Galliano.
The meeting marked the first
time the four women had
been together since the Se-
cond World War, where, in
England’s darkest 20th Cen-
tury hours, the four were
flung together as menibers of
Britain’s Women’s Auxiliary
Airforce (WAAFS) in
defense of their native land.

Waterman says she and her
three fellow WAAFs plotted

flight courses as airforce
piotters in various flight com-
mand and radar stations
around England.

Explaining why the four
friendships have survived
separations , different
lifestyles, and the eroding
power of time, Waterman
says, ‘‘We were all young, we
all joined ai the same time,
and we were all sent to the
same training camp at the
same time. We came together
in very traumatic times, with
England a virtual armed
camp. It was not the sort of
