and behold, I was floating in space, watching the
stars flaring in magnificent colors along the rim of

the Milky Way.

Just a dream. Of course.

But since I was a kid, I
have always lacked a power-
ful paranoia about death. It
may be simply that in my last
lifetime I lived in a country
where they believed in rein-
carnation, and some sense of
that carried over.

The first time 1 nearly
drowned, I noticed that
rather than being awful, the
sensation that overtook me
was quite pleasant. 1 have
since learned, of course, that
I was a victim of rhapsody of
the deep, or some such thing.

Nevertheless, 1 have come
close to drowning nearly half
a dozen times, and while per-
formed the necessary actions
to save myself or at least at-
tracted attention in order to
be saved, it was always with a

gee-I-guess-I-have-to-do-this _

attitude, rather than any pro-
found feeling that this was
really The End.

On a few other occasions
when death stared me in the
face in a different way, the
most interesting discovery
was that rather than panic
setiing in, a kind of indif-

’ ference overwhelmed me. If

anything, I felt somewhat
amused by the circumstances.

These, by the way, were ex-
treme, all-is-iost kind of
situations.

None of this is to suggest
that I don’t scramble to sur-
vive on a daily. basis like

everybody else, keep a sharp.

eye out for oncoming cars
when I cross a street, worry
about avalanches when |’m
climbing, struggle as hard as
anybody to make sure the
boat I’m on doesn’t sink, or

Life woulda’t make any sense
otherwise. And 1 am equally
incapable of thinking that
such a wonder as life doesn’t
have some point to it.

What prompted these
thoughts, in part, was the
news about NASA permitting
people to ship the ashes of
Joved ones into orbit for
$3,900. 1 know | immediately
turned to my wife and said:

1 guess [| was about seven
when these thoughts first hit
me.

{ still actually harbor fan-
tasies of at least getting into
orbit, whether as a reporter

I leave this lifetime. But if all
else fails, I'd at least like my
ashes sent aloft.

So far, | have seen nothing
in the media except criticism
of the ashes-in-orbit scheme.
A piece of the sky has been
sold off to the morticians,
complained one columnist,
