They can be planted out after Chnstmas or left in a con- tainer for use next year. How can you help your tree sur- vive for another year? Lesley Ansell-Shepherd, chief naturalist of Lynn Canyon Ecology Centre, has some tree survival tips. Indoors — make sure the tree is not sitting in a draught or close to the heat register. — don’t overwater, allow the soil to dry out slightly bet- ween waterings as you would a houseplant. — avoid targe or hot Christmas lights and restnct the use of lights on the tree to short periods to avoid burn- ing the needles. -— avoid clammp-on ornaments which may damage the bran- ches or bark. After Christmas — you must move a living tree out- doors gradually. Move it from your warm house to a cooler basement, portch or garage before moving it right outside. The tree can be kept in a pot or tub all year. If you choose to do this make sure the tree is watered carefully and remember that potted plants dry out quicker than those in the garden. If you want to plant the tree out of doors wait until the danger of frost is past, then dig a hole generously larger than the rootbali. If the tree is in sacking, leave the sacking on the rootball but cut a few slashes in it. Place the tree in the hole and carefully cut away the top of the sacking. Fill in the hole tamping it down as you go to make sure the roots will be in contact with the soil. Soak the newly planted tree well with water but avoid fertilizers. A Christmas open house SANTA couldn’t make it, but he asked his friend the magic clown Rainbow Sky to come instead — to the annual Christmas Open House at the Lynn Valley Branch of North Vancouver District Library. There will be music and refreshments from 2-5 p.m. on Tuesday, December 20, and Rainbow Sky will be there between 2:30 and 3:30 p-m. Drop in for a cup of coffee and a moment to relax from your busy Christmas schedule.
