Up on the roof sure beats banking

JUDY STONE'S day starts at 6:00 or 6:30 a.m.
and ends sometimes around midnight. Head of
Burrard Roofing, a homeowner (she is also

renovating her North Van house completely),.

single mother, and owner of five animals, she is a

very busy woman.

Her home and garden are
pleasantly muddly, sleeping
pets turn up in odd corners.
She explains that she used to
be very neat until her time
became too precious for her
to. be houseproud. The
phone rings incessantly until
she turns it off for the in-
terview; she replants a plant
one of her two Beagles has
dug up, muttering she must
stop using bonemeal fer-
tilizer, while one of the dogs
stares guiltily from under a
char.

The dogs, Sadie and
Pansy, force Judy to take an
hour's break each day to
walk them. It is her main
relaxation in a lifestyle that
1s extremely hectic.

“Not a day goes by that
there isn’t a crisis,” she says,
“sometimes five or six.”

“Tve learned to accept
disaster... it builds
character.”

Burrard Roofing employs
two crews of six workers,
one for tar and gravel and
one for shake or shingle
roofs.

The company does up to
four jobs at any one time,
and is holding its own,
although Judy holds out no
hopes of becoming rich in a
hurry. “It's a hard slog being
in business for yourself.” she
says, but the switch from

Personal as well as
professional reasons.

Being in charge, has given
her a confidence and in-
dependence which she has
learned to value highly. She
also knows her limitations.

“I don't want to be the
corporate woman,” she says,
adding that her. small
company allows her to stay
at home with her garden and
pets. “If I got any bigger I'd
have to give up my homelife,
and I'm not prepared to do
that.”

Judy works almost ex-
clusively on the North
Shore. Her company

specializes in residential re-
roofing. She has never found
her sex to be against her in
her business dealings. and
says she has, with few ex-
ceptions, always enjoyed a
good rapport with = her
chents. “fm a homeowner
too,” she says. “Il know what

they're going through.”

Indeed, if she hadn’t been
a homeowner she would
never have got into roofing
in the first place. Her roof
leaked, and, trying to fix it
herself, she met a roofer who
helped her. She needed a
new roof so he took her
along to some of his jobs and
she learned how roofing was
done. “I was a lot stronger
than anyone thought,” she
says.

Judy decided she liked
roofing better than banking
and the two. went into
partnership in May 1979, a
partnership which ended last
summer. Now Judy is alone
at the top) of Burrard
Roofing, which isn't always
an ¢asy place to be.

But she’s “been tested”
and learned to take her
lumps. Her reputation is

more important to her than
money, she says, and so far
she has had no dissatisfied
customers.
