By NANCY WEATHERLEY LISTEN TO THE regimen and it sounds like an advanced form of Outward Bound, but actually Porteau Camp, north of Horseshoe Bay, is a government correction centre for juveniles. The camp uses peer pressure, hard, menial but essential labor and_ the challenge of wilderness survival to give its inhabitants a new feeling of success and self worth says Bob Fairbridge, Porteau's director. Entry to the camp is by stipulation of a court order for boys 13 to 17 and the “punishment is being sent to the camp not the camp itself which is geared to improving the self image” says Fair- bndge. Servicing the entrre Lower Mainland the camp has been running since 1967 and year round since 1974. It offers courses summer, winter, weekdays and weekends The boys are randomly placed in groups of eight to ten, and no one is” ever kicked out no matter how much trouble he causes or how many times he runs away from the fenceless camp ‘sunday news. WORKING OUT PROBLEMS Wilderness survival aids young offenders calisthenics which go on until everyone is Cooperating - only then is the excercise period over. This is the first in- troduction the boy will have to the way Porteau is run. At six o'clock each morning the day begins with a swim in the ocean no matter what the season or weather and this is followed by a two mile run. If one by doesn't cooperate everybody suffers. For instance if one boy says he wants to stay in bed and not run, the group's day cannot start until he has changed his mind. Even if they have to carry him on the run he'll go eventually. So the onus is on the group to work together. SIMPLE RULES Unlike most institutions the camp has only three rules. Lf you swear you get on the floor and do 15 pushups for stage one - as the group progresses in the camp they set their own standards and the pushups per swear word may be as high as 50. This is simply to teach people to think before STAY IN SHAPE SECTION WOMEN - FOOD TRAVEL they speak explains Fair- bridge. The second rule is that if you smoke you roll your own cigarettes. Everything has a reason at Porteau and the logic behind that rule is that nothing comes easy there. Also the butts go out more easily than commercially rolled cigarettes so the fire hazard is greatly reduced. And rule number three is do as you're told. But the real secret to success is to try. Level One, the newest group, never leaves the camp. And what do they do to keep busy? “Any dirty, rotten, low-down job we can find for them” Fairbrdge says cheerfully. Jobs like ditchdigging and scrubbing floors are likely choices. The bays are kept so busy working they never have the time or energy to cause trouble. EFFORT ENCOURAGED Level Two can only be reached when a stage one has proved himself to be cooperating and trying his CONTINUED ON PAGE C2 THEYRE TINY NOW but one day these English cocker spaniel pups like the one 11 year old Amanda Forrestal is holding could be winning ribbons in dog shows like the one to be held on Sunday at the West Van YMCA starting at 12 noon.
