bolic helmet or shield at the
head of their ships in the
hopes that the gods would
protect them. Later, Roman
vessels demonstrated the
arrogance of empire builders
by carrying a figure head of a
centurion as a_ sign of
strength.

Today, owners of old
sailing ships throughout the
world keenly abide by
tradition. And the man they

works with saws, adzes,
chisels and gouges as used by
the old figurehead carvers.

Whitehead does his own
painting and gilding, with
the help of his wife, Doris,
who will be accompanying
him to Boat Show '82.

Hours for this year’s nine-
day Show will be 12 o'clock
noon thru 10 p.m. on
weekdays and Saturdays;
noon thru 6 p.m. on Sun-
days. Admission is $4 for
adults and just $2 for juniors
(S to 15) as well as senior
citizens. Senior Skipper’s
Day will fall on Feb. 11,
allowing senior citizens into
the Show free of charge.
