A2 - Wednesday, January 13, 1982 - North Shore News Strictly personal by Bob Hunter PIERRE TRUDEAU said a while ago that martial law in Poland (which, in my book, means the subjugation of dissidents with machine guns and concentration camps) was preferable to civil war, and resultant Soviet intervention. After all, said Pierre, it was done to prevent a civil war. Good lord. Trudeau's affinity for totalitarianism gets more apparent every year. The next thing you know, he'll be applauding the military dictators’ in Argentina. Oops, wait. Isn't he already providing them with the materials for future nuclear weapons? Why, by gum, so he is. Oh well, I suppose it’s not fashionable in the typical Canadian home to argue about the issue of whether Canadian uranium will be the stuff that triggers World War Three. After all, the Ontario uranium industry needs to make a few sales. Far be it from anybody to inject a question of morality or ethics or even long-term self Dog s WEST VANCOUVER police may soon not have to call North Vancouver RCMP or Vancouver Police every time it needs a dog to track suspects. The force is planning to set up its own dog section in the near future - if it can get ” a aenrasimanee aamaneme interest into the debate. But this business of Trudeau's — that is, Canada’s endorsement of the military junta’s savage attack on the Polish people — is frankly too much. Let’s at least call Trudeau what he is: The Neville Chamberlain of his times. No, he’s worse than that. Chamberlain sold out to Hitler but he never imposed military rule on his own country. Trudeau, of course, betrayed the very notion of democracy in Canada in 1970 with the imposition of the War Measures Act, when he turmed us into the second-biggest police state in the world, after Russia. That's a crime for which I don’t think he should be forgiven. Although, when it comes down to cases, the crime of rudeau’s too much! giving political aid to the Warsaw regime at this particular moment in Poland’s history ranks up there among Trudeau's more despicable acts. I don't think there can be any doubt that when the definitive history of Canada is written a century from now, Pierre Trudeau will be seen, in retrospect, as ab- solutely the worst disaster ever visited upon the nation. For one thing, I doubt very much that a century from now such a geo political unit as Canada will remain. And when the accounting is done, Trudeau will be seen as the guy who finally, in a berserk ego trip aimed at creating a lasting monument to himself, forced through a new constitution which destroyed a once highly- successful federal state by turning it into a vast colony with a palace in Ottawa and a de facto emperor in charge. You see, with his flip remarks about Poland, Trudeau has once again revealed his essential sympathies. He is perfectly in harmony with oligarcal totalitarianism — which is rule by a handful of dic- tators, instead of just one. They all want to con- centrate power in a single place where an elite group can control it, playing with the economy like an errant wah-wah pedal according to their ideological fantasies. Of course Trudeau would support the butchers in Warsaw. He could hardly say anything against them after what he did in 1970, and yet may do again. I try not to be paranoid, but I remember a wise old man once telling me: Anybody who isn't paranoid is crazy. You did note the reports out of Ottawa last month about a cabinet order ap- proving the establishment of civilian internment camps in the event of war or revolution? The order was approved in May, 1981. Questioned as to whether this cabinet order violated the new con- stitution, government mouthpieces said, oh, no, don’t worry, we'll only use these powers in a situation where a “national response” is required. Oh, great. For “national,” read “Ottawa.” A litde bit of paranoia is good for you. Ask the Poles. uad needs adog hold of a dog.
