C3 - Sunday News, September 6, 1981 Develop their read’ “Habits are formed gradually, and the reading habit is no exception,” says Patricia Koppman, a member of the Board of Directors of the 65,000- member International Reading Association. Basic skills are a major thrust in schools these days, but Koppman feels it is important that children develop the reading habit as well as the basic ability to read. “Basic skills are im- portant,” says Koppman, “but if children achieve basic skills, but have no desire to use these skills in their daily Crossword ACROSS DOWN 1 Kind of grain 1 Shme 5 Swearword 2 Biblical 9 Query brother 12 Concert 3 Garden instrument amphibian 13 First word of 4 Pick out Caesar's 5 Oblongs boast 6 Eagle's nest 14 Hotel 7 Powerful 15 Ardor explosive 16 Branches of (abbr ) learning 8 Fizzing 17 Street (Fr) sounds 18 Oid 9 River in 20 Military Yorkshire operation 10 Compact 22 On same side 23 Nuclear 19 Go up agency (abbr ) 21 Defense 24 Fastenings missile 27 Break ranks 23 Am not (si!) 31 Bird 24 Glacial ndge 32 Island of 25 Non-existent sasnts 26 Sooner state 34 Vermin 7 {appr 35 Young lady 28 Sights (Fr., abbr.) 29 Coll 37 This (Sp) olege . 39 Guillet 40 Resihent 42 Thesis 44 Avoirdupois werght 45 Southern state (abbr ) 46 Work dough 49 __ chapel, Vatican 53 Eighth month (abbr.) 54 Percussion in- strument 56 Nigenan tribesmen 57 Genetic materia! 58 Learning 59 Rivers (Sp) 60 Lysergic acid diethylamide 61 Ogied 82 Novelist Ferber EMERALD: BERELLA a: 11 Part of the leg 30 Covered with LUSTRE SHEEN: PINGO FRANCE: Answer to Puzzie 1a fo {a [o| HHO OM) AEM athletic group 47 Members of convent moisture 48 Mtid oath 33 Harness 49 Certain attachment —-50 In the same 36 Is (Sp.) place (abbr ) 38 Skinny fish 51 Rush hour at 41 Totter the diner 43 Lampoon 52 Weather 45 Sighted bureau (abbr ) 46 Philosopher 55 Cowboy Marx Rogers ? 7 . he by scheepjes - wool biend 50g (all cotors) by Scheepjes - 509 100% cotton by Red Heart - 2 02. 100% acrylic by Patons - 509 100% acrylic (westiynn mall only) 100% Wool Aran - 509 (beaut! fil colors) by Scheepjes - 100% wool 50q (macnine washable) - by Bernat - 4 02. bails (ots of colors) by Pingouin bulky fashion ROUCLE SPORT yarn1009r. . * 4 Free Selected Mon Tricot Book with your Purchase Westiynn Mall and Park Royal North by Pingouin - wool blend D.K. 50g lives or no desire to read, then the basic skills will not be used. “Therefore, one of most important parents can do for their children is to become in- volved in developing their children's reading habits, their love of reading. ‘If the school works to teach the child ‘how’ to read and the parent works to teach the child to ‘want to’ read, then .the reading process will ‘be complete. What is taught will be used and enjoyed through a lifetime.” “One way that parents can help to develop a reader is to create an atmosphere in which reading is”~ en- couraged. The home is the child’s first learning en- vironment.’ Koppman outlines some ways that parents cam make this en- vironment a positive one. ® Make reading materials available in the home. Books, of course, but other the things materials such as pewspapers, magazines, games, catalogs, posters, labels on products and even letters should be present as well. e Set an example. “The best gift we can give a child is a good example. When chiidren see parents en- joying a book — _ using reading skills — they will be eager for the day when they can share the magic.” specializin repertoire, THE LARGEST SALE OF THE YEARY! Koppman notes that, with a litde ingenuity, parents can ‘turn ordinary household activites into leaming ex- periences. ® Talk to your child. “The more language a child hears and uses, the better chance there is that he or she will be able to learn to read those same words. “The same words we speak are also the words we read, but speaking and understanding must come first.” Listen to your. child. “Children need to have someone who will listen and share in their thoughts. Children who can express their thoughts orally will be more able to understand what they read, and will be able to write these thoughts. “Parents should make an effort to sit down with their children three to five minutes a day just to listen and share. “A child who has learned to listen at home will be ready to listen at school, and listening is essential to learning.” Koppman also emphasizes that parents should spend time with their children. “Our time is so valuable that we sometimes find it difficult to work in time for the child,” says Koppman. “On a blank calendar, mark each day how much SALE | $1.97 $2.27 $1.57 $2.47 $4.47 980-2913 922-1023 time you spend with the child.
