Dear Editor: I was both aigry and appalled to read in your August 27 edition that West Vancouver City council is considering “rezoning Panorama Studios to uses other than film production.” I would like to point ont that the studio has been there a good many years longer than the residents or condominiums of Panorama Village. Lf this same group of people had moved next to a school, would they then have tried to have it closed down? Several pictures were in production during the months when those buildings were first occupied; it is not as if they didn’t realize the studio would be used. It can be compared to moving in next door to a police station, firehall or hospital — they chose to move next to it — let them live with their Monar Dear Editor: “Hands off the Queen’, Mailbox, August 27, ex- presses a view which has never failed to amaze me. Canada should have _ rid herself of the anachronistic Brush monarchy eons ago. The very concept of hereditary privilege is alicn to a democracy, where the Head of State ts elected, or as in some countries, such as Ireland, appointed. But, if we are going to continue to have a hereditary head of State, then why not be consistent and have a hereditary Prime Minister as well. Or follow this mediaevel, feudal system to the letter and have every occupation a hereditary one. Dad’s a butcher, so his son must follow in his footsteps, etc. Isn't this precisely the type of class system that so many of our = ancestors immigrated to this country, m order to escape. The British crown ts a symbol of colonial oppression, as many former colomes, such as India, will attest to. How long will Canadians allow themselves and their country to be demeaned by ths type of foreign imperialism? Perhaps they don’t realize that over fifty million dollars .was spent by film companies in British Columbia in nineteen seventy-nine. miles away do to prevent it? Send over the British army? The very idea is degrading. Canada, I am, sure is quite well equipped to take care of herself without the in- terference of foreign troops, who would, of course, stick around for decades af- terwards, as a “peacekeeping force” (shades of Ulster)! ' Hence, behind its facade of omnipotent strength, the British Monarchy is in fact an impotent, totally wor- thless institution. However, it should not, on the other hand be dismissed as being a harmless. quaint old tradition. It is not, as Mr. Trudeau found out when he had to go to England, cap in hand, to ask permission to change the Canadian Constitution and then to add insult to injury was warned by a couple of obscure Labour M P.s_ that the British government would block any attempts to change our constitution without their complete approval The Bnush Monarchy ts one of the of the major bones of contention, in relation to the Province of Quebec Dangled insolenatly by the Anglos, it has done more to cause dissension in Canada than any other factor, be w language or rehgion It endows the British in this country, with special status. which ts unavondable After all, if the Swedish head of State was also head of State in Canada, wouldn't the Swedes supenor also cnyoy 3 position Tiny Human Feet, pertectly formed. only ten weeks afier conception A aneennge trom the Marth Van Pro-tite Goceety Our. studio was a major reason why some of those films were made here. Communities would love to have this facility where such talent would come and work at such an_ interesting business. This whole uproar is making a laughing stock out of this city, already the Vancouver Sun has had a story on it called, “Only in West Vancouver...” I'm not particularly thrilled that a game show is to take up one half of the sound stages for such a long period of time either, but it is all part of a business that this province and district can only gain from, not just in direct money from the film companies, but from the tourism, generated by the “on location” scenery. And don't forget all those hungry contestants on “Let’s Make a Deal” who could spend y ‘worthless’ here? Or the Dutch, or Chinese, or any other nation, for that matter? Last, but by no means least, it makes mé@ physically sick to see one human being bow down and grovel before ‘another, addressing them as Royal Highness, Majesty, etc. Free minded people everywhere must surely feel a similar revulsion when witnessing this type of nauseating scenario. In this day and age when everyone's undeniable right to be equal is taken for granted, to deify one human being, setting them above all others as being the next thing to God (She actually is Head of the Church of England) is nothing short of a grotesque and direct contradiction of democracy. Obviously I have reason to be more concerned than most residents in that a good portion of my pay cheques have come from work in Panorama studios — but I’m sure there are other people in this community who can see the value of this unique production facility in West Vancouver. Please let your views be known to the council and this paper! Forrest Taylor West Vancouver Bureaucratic nightmare over Dear Editor: Over the last 1% years our family have had, hanging over our heads, the threat of a bureaucratic nightmare — the possibility of our future son-in-law being sent back to Switzerland, leaving our daughter Judy and their two- year-old daughter Eliza, to fend for themselves. Now, thanks to the loyalty of our friends, who have bombarded the office of the Minister of Immigration in Ottawa with letters of ap- peal, the expulsion order has been stayed. A Minister’s Permit for Hans to stay in Canada was issued last week. Our very special thanks however, go out to Gwen Skakum, secretary to our Conservative Member of Parhamrent, the Honorable Ron Huntingdon. Without the quiet perserverance of Gwen all of our efforts would have been fruitless.
