Katharine Hamer News Reporter khamer@usnews.coui bill bissett arrives for an interview on a grey _ afternoon dressed in black from baseball cap to umbrella, carrying a plastic bag of oranges. “They. were six for a dollar,” he enthuses, “it’s so suave.” He poses for a photo in Victoria Park, musing aloud about the origins of an unknown stain on the lapel of his jacket. [tell him I usually find these anonymous blotches to be toothpaste. “Yes,” he says excitedly, “that's it — and maybe the stuff on the trees is the toothpaste from the people above.” It doesn’t take much to fire bissett’s imagination: he’s known for being a spirited iconoclast. The author of over 60 published collections who immersed himself in °60s counter-culture when he first moved to Vancouver takes on the role of mentor to Capilano College writing students next month as a writer in residence. Three days a week, five hours a day, for the last nvo weeks of October, bissett's office will be open to students registered in the college’s Writing Practices Program.
