Japanese orchestra
playing free concert

JAPAN’S Funabasiti Junior Orchestra is travelling
to Vancouver for a series of concerts this week
including a free concert at Sutherland Seconday
Schoo! on Aug. 25.

The orchestra W was established in 1981 as the junior counter-
part of the city’s larger Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra.
Funabashi City is located in Chiba Prefecture, just east of Tokyo.

The Funabashi Junior Orchestra — 104 musicians and an
entourage of 18 chaperones — will perform at the Pacific National
Exhibition before beginning a whirlwind tour of North Shore
sites,

Thursday will find the group participating in a cultural
exchange at the Squamish Nation Rec Centre and taking in tours
of the Capilano Fish Hatchery and the Capilano Suspension
Bridge before their concert at Sutherland.

The free concert at Sutherland Secondary on Friday, Aug. 25
starts at 7:30 p.m and is open to the general public.

Waving the baton will be conductor Jun Ando,.an accom-
plished vocalist and musician who began his career as a music
teacher at a high school in Chiba Prefecture and has a reputation
as the top junior high school conductor in Japan.

He has ied his school orchestra to nine gold standards and
eight silver standards at the annual All-Japan musical competition.

The orchestra will showcase its wares with a selection of Strauss
and Dvorak but also traditional Japanese arrangements.

The Funabashi visitors will have a turn a showcasing their
country when the Sutherland school band travels there in
February for a large musical festival.
