The store is Sarah's Gifts in North Vancouver’s Dollar Shopping Centre. Sarah is Sarah Charleton. The hands belong to sisters Stephanie and Anika Harrer who mind the shop. And what a shop it is. Especially if dried flowers, pottery, candles, greeting cards and glassware are up your alley. Anika Harrer said the store got its start seven years ago in the dried flower end of the business. It expanded to carry a wide array of other products, both imported and domestic. “We have things from . e ae NEWS photos Paul McGrath around the world and around) = ANIKA (‘eft) and Stephanie Harrer show off items at Sarah’s the block,” she said. Around the block includes work by Deep Cove painters and craftspeople. Around the world includes hard-to-find items like a rainstick from Chile. Shift it up and down and you'll hear the sound ofa tropical shower. Then there’s what Anika Harrer calls the Visitor, an cerie-looking bust of a head which, she said, belongs on a doorstep. Speaking of the Visitor, vou might just find that title over at Dial-A-Movie, where Karen Graves is one of the clerks. The store, which has been there 15 years, has sister locations in Parkgate and Maplewood. “It’s very local, we know all our customers, everybody knows us,” Graves said. And it’s very loyal. Customers, she said, are Gifts, including a bust calied the Visitor. often forgiven if they return movies late or if they don’t rewind. Working at a video store affords her the chance to screen some of the latest and greatest flicks. Two a shift, sometimes. “Right now I'm watching Circle of Friends, and Adam Sandler movies, Billy Madison and Big Daddy, and a lot of recommendations. 1 just watched Best Seller yesterday and it was awesome. The Insider is a huge one, it didn’t do well at the Oscars or theatres, but in rental it’s only just launched and it’s so good. And Star Wars. Ir never ceases to amaze me that in a scant nine months we can build an entire human being, finger- nails, eyelashes and aff. It reat- ly is a miracle. Despite the magnitude of the production, some women actually go through the nine- month construction period without a hitch. A hitch, of course, being some minor irritation like narcolepsy or stretch marks or gaining forty unds more than the text- ks say you should. {spent some time with a gal like this the other day. She's nine months pregnant, has gained a mere 20 pounds, still goes to fitness class, still has people over for dinner, and even brags about an active sex life. Not the slight- est bit put out by her special condition, this gal. She’s posi- tively radiant. “I'm surprised you've never written about pregnan- cy, Shannon”, she cooed, sip- ping her no- -fat decaf latte and rubbing her taut tummy. “It’s simply the best time of a woman's life.” Best time of a woman's life... Hah! My recollection of pregnancy isn’t nearly as rosy as hers.
