Cardinals built mansions close to the Papal
Palace and finances went to fortify ramparts
around the centre of power. The population grew
to an estimated 40,000. Even after the Pope
returned to Rome the vestiges of money stayed
behind the walls.

While the centuries of medieval intrigue are
long, gone Avignon still basks as the chosen city of
the exiled pontiffs. Church wealth left behind a
massive palace complex surrounded by ramparts.
The summer homes of the Cardinals may be in
ruins but much of the medieval city remains
intact. Modern Avignon operates in the shadows
of its powerful past.

We visited a second-hand market one weekday
morning outside the Rempart du Rhéne overlook-
ing the river. The brocante (tlea market) was a bar-
gain hunter’s dreamworld of furniture and col-
lectibles.

Different types of markets are held throughout
the region regularly. The marcel sells fresh produce,
the foire specializes in clothing, antiquités handle
furniture and artisanat deal in arts and craits.

While the pope has left the palace, Avignon
still manages the flow of material through its sec-
ond-hand markets.
