Feb 1298 My Place reborn as bistro From page 28 industrial lower eastside of North Vancouver Ciry, Peter and Wanda Maier have encountered complications running their good quality Afy Place Cafe. A quick sale of the business ensues. Chef Page, who previ- ously worked with Peter Majer at the Pan Pacific, snaps it up. The Cordon Bleu Cafe is born. (Fortissimo of French horns.) Much congratulatory applause from immediate neighbors and assorted Lower Lonsdaiers who have had the good fortune to sample Cordon Blez: in its intancy. Because Page has filled the former My Place Cafe with the engaging personality of a warm French bistro and some fine French cookery. The Harbor Manor build- ing that is home to the Cordon Bleu is an elegant little archi- téctural jewel in a predomi- nately small industrial neigh- borhood, but i it is easy to miss after dark and not so easy to see in daylight hours. Adventurous diners, how- ever, would be well-advised to seek it out. Page first opened Cordon Bles tor dinner on New Year’s Eve and now serves after 5 p.m. Thursday through Saturday. Lunch is offered Monday through Friday and the restau- rant’s large kitchen is also the home base for Page’s Cordon Blen catering, business. In addition to his catering and cafe businesses, Page con- tinues the good community work of the Majers in prepar- ing the meals for the invalu- able Meals on Wheels organi- zation. Thus far Cordon’s dinner trade is relatively sparse, but expect word of mouth to change that situation shortly. This is a very good small bistro with better than average French cuisine offered at rea- sonable prices. The menu (appetizers, soups and salads $3.50 to $6; main entrees $12 to $19, most in the $12 to $14 range) is small and not yet partcularly ambitious, but the dishes (Gnocchi Romana, Roasted Rack of Lamb, Medallions of Venison sweet and sour, Chicken Cordon Bleu, Top Sirloin steak in pepper and cognac sauce and Pan-fried Sole in a parmesan crust) are uniformly well prepared and . artistically presented. No mediocre passengers here. A Trio of Salmon appetizer sampled on a recent Friday night was an excellent intro- duction to Cordon Bleu. It featured salmon in three variations: slices of cold- smoked arranged in spokes around a central hub of chopped salmon tartar ringed A small sampling of N.Shore eateries A summary of past: Table Hopping reviews for your consumption: The Beach Side Cafe, 1362 Marine Dr., West Vancouver, 925- 1945. The dish also comes with a tomato salsa. Meat lovers should try the Sirloin steak in pepper sauce. It has a peppery bite to be reckoned with.
