For some kids, this will be their first time crossing busy streets ard intersec- tions and they haven’ vet learned traf- safety rules. Other students may be excited and forget the rules. The British Columbia Automobile Association (BCAA) would like ro offer the following safety tips for drivers and parents to make sure kids head back to - school safely. -: Drivers can help. make the road safe by doing the following: : © Drive carefuily and adjust your speed in school and playground zones — slow down and allow yourself more time to react. ® Be careful when driving past parks, playgrounds and residential areas where there may be parked cars. Be aware of potential blind spots. Chiidren may dart out from between parked cars, so quick reactions are extremely impor- tant. © Watch out for children riding ieycles, especially the younger ones wikose reflexes aren't really fully devel- oped. Parents can also help prepare them- selves and children by doing the fol- lowing: * Before your kids go back to school, it’s wise co go over pedestrian safety rules with them. This is especial- ly important for the kids going to school for the first time. The dangers of darting, between parked cars should be pointed out. ¢ Show vour children the safest routes between home and school. Before crossing any street, make sure they pause and look all ways, point and proceed. © When dropping your children off, find an approved drop-off zone.
