12 — Sunday, September 8, 1996 - North Shore News parki By Martin Millerchip Contributing Writer A proposal to widen the minimus size of park- ing stalls in North Vancouver District was narrowly defeated by council Monday in a close 4-3 vote. Coun, Ernie Crist had pro- posed that the size of district parking stalls be widened to 106 inches (102 inches for small cars) measured centre to centre of the painted dividing lines. Current district regulations require regular parking stalls to be 2.6 m (102 inches) and small-car stalls to be 2.44 m (96 inches). Crist told council that in the past it had been assumed stalls would be 102 inches from line to line. “It was sort of a gentle- man’s agreement but I guess we don’t live in an age of gen- tlemen anymore,” said Crist. He pointed out that park- ing stall space shrinks if the painted area of the stall lines is included in the measurement and said that many parking lots in the district are using this type of measurement to squeeze in the number of spaces required by zoning or permit. Coun Don Bell agreed with Crist’s assertion that the move to bigger cars or com- pact vans could create a prob- jem of damaged doors in tight spaces. Mayor Murray Dykeman disagreed. Leave your car at home and walk,” — said Dykeman. DAAAAAAA You've Waitec! Both he and Coun, Janice Harris argued that the move to increase parking space size would increase the amount of land needed for parking in a district, where land costs are among, the highest in’ the region. Staff confirmed that any new parking regulations would only apply to. spaces: created after adoption of the bylaw. Existing parking stall size could only be altered inthe event of a change of use of the site. Richmond and Surrey use the same width of parking stall as the district, Vancouver and North Vancouver City use smaller widths, while Delta and West Vancouver require larger stalls. Dykeman, Harris, Coun. Goldsmith-Jones and Coun. Jind Cuthbert opposed Crist’s motion.
