very well known, he never. made a
great deal of money.

Chippendale designs under-
went a series of transformations

~ during their originator’s life. They -

were inspired by classical Greek
and Roman forms, by French
Rocoro, and Gothic styles. Much
of Chippendale’s early furniture

. hadi gracefully curved cabriole
legs and backs similar to those

- which had been popular during

the reign of Queen Anne in the ~
early 1700s.

The style he is most often
associated with is ‘Chinese
Chippendale’. Today the term is
often used in a derogatory sense
to describe an item that is overly
decorated, but when English mer-
chant vessels brought samples of

"furniture front China, Chippendale

must have been impressed — the
upward curves and playful shapes
of pagodas obviously appealed to

his sense for grand decor.
Bookcases, china cabinets,
chairs and bedsteads sported lac-
quered pagodas and eluborate fret
work. Restraint shows up in the /
legs which were straight and;
unadorned.
Fashiuns and styles change. We

" may detest or adore the curlicues

and frills, but we must admit that
few furniture designers in the
years since then have displayed
the exuberance and versatility of
Thomas Chippendale.
