have features which show up as
weaknesses in earthquakes:

O The posts (vertical wood
columns) may be weak because of
wood rot/insect infestation from
poor drainage along the foundation.
Where this is the case, the entire
post or column should be replaced.
A spliced-in section of new column
creates a weak point which an earth-
quake would certainly discover.

building, it is these posts or columns
which hold the building up so their
strength is critical to the entire build-
ing's survivability.
4 The posts may not be continuous
from roof to foundation. The use of
two or more posts (say in a two-
storey house) introduces a point of
weakness and a reduction in racking
strength against the lateral forces of
an earthquake. A single continuous
column is stronger.
27 The horizontal members (beams,
joists, sills) may be inadequately tied
to the vertical posts or columns. This
is the most common problem and is
also the easiest to correct.

At the time of their construction,
earthquake risks was not a big con-
sideration, and few would have had
these recommended connectors
installed.

Because of these inherent weak-
nesses, it will be worthwhile for the
owners of post and bean buildings
to inspect the condition of the sup-
porting columns, and determine the
adequacy of the connectors between
the posts and horizontal elements.
