Co OR ah a OEE eg THE OTHER day Tran down to the West Vancouver Legion to double my previ- ous donation to the Remembrance Day poppy campaiga. No big deal. ft only cost mea total of $15 instead of the usual $5. My haste was inspired by rage. A spokesman for the Canadian Jewish Congress (CJC) had been on the box telling people they shouldn't buy poppies unless their local Legion branch was in favor of letting turbans in, . There was nothing to prevent Sikhs coming i, you will recall. ft was a matter of turbans. The rule was no headgear. Now it wasn't my intention to mention the CJC and its antics again so soon, It has denounced me to the B.C, Human Rights Council as a roller who should be liable to a fine of up to $100,000 for not lik- ing their favorite movie, and [have already had my say about that. But the poppy thing cannot be disregarded. It wasn't only the CIC that urged this mini-boycott. The pompously named World Sikh Organization of Canada was also in on the deal. A plague on both their houses. But right from the start of the turban issue the CJC stuck its nose into something that wasn't its business. It led the attack on the legion because it stands foursquare for the cult of multicult. What arrogance these minority groups display. What cheek, what brass, what insolence! When are un-hyphenated Canadians going to tell these upstarts to get lost? How long are we going to put up with being told how to handle our knives and forks? In Eastern Canada, Muslims are going to court to demand that their religious holidays be recognized. Minorities have even managed to get Remembrance Day crosses removed from public buildings. Oy et isn't as if the money goes to the Legion. It goes to good works. Regardless of where it goes, why should Legion folk have to submit to a stamp of approval from the politically correct? The gorge rises. And here we have Michae! Valpy of the Globe & Mail har- rumphing away. faa column of Nov. 3, he sneered that “through- out Western history, ceremonial rituals have surfaced and vanished concerning whether the hat should be on or off." The rituals worked, he went on, where there were homogeneous tribal societies. But what the legion delegates voted for at their annual convention was “the imposition of cultural dominance — cultural intolerance — in a multicultural society.” Wrong again, Valpy. What they voted for was the right to manage their own affairs without interfer- ence from you, Sikhs, the CJC or anyone else. Valpy quoted with horror the Legion man who said that ifthe Sikhs feel they must wear tur- bans “then let them go back to their own country and do what they want to do.” Bang on. He was one of millions who didn’t ask for Valpy’s much-loved multicul- tural society, This country is now fed to the teeth with multicult, Polls taken at the time showed overwhelming support for the legion branches’ right to do as they pleased. Valpy even thought that the was ssure groups had been pretty decent about all this. He based that misconception on their conde- scending “support” of Poppy Day provided political correctness was observed. 1U's because of people like him that this country is in a racial and cultural mess, Their motto is “We surrender.” The sume KEN BAXTER LAWYER 24 Years Experience . nincompoop even wants to “de- legislate” Christian holidays like Christmas so as to please the mul- ticult.
