Hearing
set for
heroin
sale case

A VIETNAMESE refugee,
ordered deported from
Canada in 1992 after an
armed home — invasion,
appeared briefly in North
Vancouver provincial court on
Wednesday in connection
with an August heroin-traf-
ficking charge.

Vu Van Le, 30, was wearing a
dark grey suit and white buttoned
shirt when he appeared before
Judge Bill Rodger.

The young-looking, clean-cut
man with a slight build appeared
relaxed in the courtroom with a
Vietnamese interpreter standing at
his side.

The court proceedings took
about five minutes.

Le’s next appearance in court is
slated for Jan. 10.

A preliminary hearing is sched-
uled then in connection with an
Aug. 16 alleged sale of $600 worth
of heroin to an undercover North
Vancouver RCMP officer.

In February, Le appealed his
deportation order to the federal
Immigration and Refugee Board.
The board stayed (dropped) the
deportation order for a three-year
period with conditions, one of
which said that Le was to keep the
peace and be on good behavior.

Le had been ordered deported
after he was convicted in
December 1990 of assault with a

weapon and untawful confinement. .

Le was sentenced to a 3.5-year
jail term for those offences.

Five months before, he was
sentenced to one month in jail for
failing to show up in court for the
case that involved an 1989 home
invasion in Calgary.

Le was granted permanent resi-
dence in Canada in 1987 in
Vancouver.

He was released on $1,000 bail
following the August drug bust.
