co en create JOY TELLS ALL THE LAUNCH of that new Sportscaster’s Lounge in Hermann Schaad’s Sheraton Landmark Hotel on Robson not only attracted all the heavy-hitter sports types but reintroduced one of Vancouver’s most respected and admired hoteliers, West Van’s Victor Burt. Victor was the GM for many years at the Hotel Vancouver before . being transferred to one of :) the world’s most prestigious . hotels, The Drake in Chicago. He was at the helm of that hotel for more than Al years and returned to Vancouver 10 months ago. He’s now working for Price Waterhouse overseeing the three Sheraton hotels and “enjoying every minute of it... Georgia Tremaine, the gutsy new owner of the Harrington Gallery on Georgia, unveiled her new show “Women in the Arts 94” which featured only female artists to bring a stronger focus on their art and to encourage women to go out and make their mark — literally! Besides the pro artists, there’s also a group of high profile women like Peggy Mulligan, Virginia Leeming, Karen Magnusson, Wendy Lisogar and Pamela Martin, who have painted, drawn and doodled artwork which will be auctioned off at the end of the month. Emily Murphy House in North Vancouver was ecstatic with the results as funds from this art work will go to support that worthy project... Andrew's Hyatt Regency last week as Prime Minister Jean Chretien arrived in town for his fundraising, sold-out dinner for 1.350 avid fans. Hundreds of well- organized protesters with their placards, banners and bull-horns had traffic stalled and snarled all around Burrard Street. American visitors were astounded at the patience of city police. “We'd clear them out immediately if our presi- dent was arriving!” said one irate fellow. ‘The PM was in good spirits and took it in stride... That was the same night that the irrepressible blues and jazz artist, Almeta Speaks, opened her show at the Monteray Lounge in Stephen Darling’s Pacific Palisades Hotel. We were invited to sip and sup on their delectable new spring menu while Almeta entertained. Three years ago she opened the Monteray Lounge to standing ovations and impressive reviews, Last Thursday as f dined with the hotel’s Moira Fitzpatrick and Audrey Gordon, and wine connoisseur Sid Cross, Almeta and executive chef Rod Butters repeat- ed their success. This fun affair was nicely orchestrated by North Shore PRs Laura Vandriel and Salma Mitha who are also letting the world know that the hotel will now be serving astrologically cor- rect dinners as well. You must reserve but you can now have your dinner and your horoscope done at the same time... There was a small intimate lun- cheon for one of my favorite fel- lows, impresario Hugh Pickett, on Monday at Jack Lew’s Trader Vic's to celebrate this octogenari- an’s 81st birthday. Grace and Ray McCarthy were there, as was CKNW’s VP of marketing John Plul. It was a delightful-party!... Speaking of delightful, one of the prettiest settings for a reception Pve ever seen had to be Michael Kaile’s Waterfront Centre Hotel and CP’s “Down the Garden Path” promotion. There were huge floral paintings, ice-carved trellises, giant decorative flowers, bumble bees and even cute little lady-bugs made of colorful balloons launching the springtime room rates at the Hotel Van, the Waterfront Centre and the Empress in Victoria. The three hotel PRs — Nancie Hall, Nancy Wong and Deirdre Campbell — did a marvellous job. They also launched “Crazy About Gardening” by Denman Island’s Des Kennedy, the Robin Williams of the Horticultural World. Cheers!
