Sixteen-year-old Leah Brocketmann led the West Vancouver club with a fifth in the 50m backstroke and two cighth- place finishes in the 100m and 200m backstoke. Her teammate Ingrid McFee placed cighth in the 50m backstoke. According to head coach Brock Turner, the highlight of the meet for the club was the performance of 14-year-old Kenneth Chang. Competing in only his second senior mect, the West Vancouver swimmer qualified for a spot at the triple-A provincial championships. The heartbreak of the meet for Chena was the gritty performance of Kathryn Jolly. On three sepa- rate swims, “KJ.” was just a tenth of a second off the Youth National Standard qualifying time — a stan- dard that ali swimmers who want to compete at the Youth National mect in May must achieve. The good news for K.J. is that she has until the spring to set the mark, Meanwhile, at the Lower Maintand regional 11-and-over championships jn Delta, 14 Chena swimmers competed in 47 events. This meet is a stepping stone to provincial double-A and triple-A events. Chena swimmers who qualified for the triple-A provincials include: Andrea Donohoe, Min Suk Kim, Kristine Lowrie, Kathleen Stoody and Scott Williams. The next step for these young swimmers is the National Youth Standard time trials, the Senior Nationals. and finally the Olympic trials. “Only the kids who have the vision, the will and the talent will mike it to the Olympics,” adds Turner, “But, all these kids are on the path to that goal.” Chena continues to rebuild its once mighty club. “We don’t have a lot of depth because we still haven't the number of members we would like, but We sure have some quality swimmers,” Turner notes.
