NV seeking access {fo continuing ed funding NORTH VANCOUVER SCHOOL BOARD ‘by Kevin Gillies « NORTH VANCOUVER District 44 School Board (NVSB) recently passed a motion authorizing the registration of the, school district under~ provisions of the Private Post-Secondary Education Act. . By registering . District 44’s ' North Shore Career Centre under the act, students wishing (o enrol in continuing education or other career-related courses could have access to provincial or federal funding. ; The Canada Student Loans Act does not recognize continuing education. Only education services regis- tered under the act — which is administered by the Private Post-Secondary Commission of B.C. — can be used by students financed by Passport to Education monies, Canada Student loans, or sponsorship by federal and pro- vincial agencies. Dr. Doug Ledgerwood, the director of North Shore Continu- ing Education, said the organiza- tion has been somewhat limited in the past as to which students they could attract. Students’ had to pay their own tuition up front to take courses. Trustee Marg Jessup noted that Capilano College had to turn away approximately 2,000 stu- dents in September and this initia- tive could help those students. Campbeil will be the first female prime minister of Canada as weil as the first who is truly from British Columbia (neither John Turner nor John A. McDonald were really from here). Not since Joe Clark was prime minister have we had a leader in Ottawa who was not trom Quebec. Campbell was far ahead of her nearest competitor, Jean Charest, when she fivst entered the !eadership race. By the time the race was finished, he had gained a lot of ground.
