1280 Shavington St., North Vancouver, built 1914, 1919 and 1925. Keith Lynn School AT FIRST glance, few people would recognize that this is a school, or that it is Keith Lynn Alternative Secondary School (KLASS) in North Vancouver. It is off Keith Road, at the end of a no-exit road on Shavington, and is therefore not visible from the main road. When it first opened in 1914 it was a one-room schvol house. Additions were made to it in 1919, and again in 1925, that have resulted in the present structure. To the right of the building in the illustration above is a long, jow structure of classrooms, and at the top of that is the gymm- nasium. In 1974, KLASS began offering an educational alternative for stu- dents on the North Shore. As a junior high school it offers credit to students through to completion of Grade 10, and allows graduates access to senior high school. Students who attend KLASS have for one reason or another found it difficult to cope in the. regular high school setting. Here they are able to work at NORTH SHORE HERITAGE their own rate in small classes. Teachers, therefore, have time to give them more individualized at- tention. As well as academic courses, cooking and a popular art pro-. gram, there are recreational activi- ties and field tips for students at KLASS. Day and overnight field trips are an important part of the learning experience offered here. These excursions help develop social skills, and provide personal challenges and group cohesiveness. Adolescence is a difficult time for many young people, and alternative schocls like Keith Lynn help to keep kids in school, and assist them in making the transi- tion into responsible adulthood. — by Dorothy Foster Glass sculpture on display FORMER NORTH Shore resident Graham Scott’s innovative glass sculpture, and the work of four other B.C. artists, will be on display at Art Works Gallery from May 25-June 22 as part of the Glass Art Association of Canada’s conference °92. Scott expresses his work in a minimal form. He plays with light and color to evoke multi-levels of meaning. In a recent interview, he said his propensity for combining manufactured materials with found natura! objects is a direct result of growing up on the North Shore. ‘3 grew up on both sides of the Capilano River. As a kid I'd play in the forest and look down on Vancouver. The duality of the natural landscape and the city is very much expressed in my work.”” Nineteen Vancouver galleries are taking part in Glass Con- ference *92, which will be centred in and around Granville Island.
