we ett Diabetes assoc. sounds seasonal alert COLD. WET, wintery weather is just around the corner, and with it comes the flu. Each year thousands of Cana- dians suffer from this nasty bug, and for some, it can prove fatal. Influenza leaves the body’s resistance weakened and open to other infections. It can be par- ticularly dangerous to people over 65, those with chronic lung, heart, or kidney disease, cancer, anemia, or diabetes. A bout with the flu can be devastating to people with diabetes, causing problems with their metabolism, and sending their blood sugar levels soaring. This leads to severe dehydration, and can result in hospitalization,’’ says the Canadian Diabetes Association (CDA). That is why the CDA is pro- moting September as flu preven- tion awareness month, and urges people with diabetes to get a flu shot. The vaccination should be taken annually during September or Oc- tober, in order to build up im- munity before the flu season starts. It will, however, still be ef- fective if taken later during the winter months. Art classes offered for children A NEW season brings many new ideas for ‘‘Avt Creations,’’ an art class for children aged six to 12 years, offered at the West Van- couver Recreation Centre, Children will express their creativity by experimenting with graphic techniques, paper Sculpture, painting and coilage.
