24 ~ Wednesday, June 5, 1991 - North Shore News Thompson fares well with ICHARD REACHES; Frank crows about chicks; Penguin Cafe Orchestra is symphonically or- chestrated. Richard Thompson — Rumor And Sigh, Capito} Records 1991 The Fairport Convention found- er moves miles ahead of the more evenly conservative folk rock of 1988's Amnesia for an alternately vicious and poignant stumbie through a world of pyschoepaths, drunks, sexual deviants, nerds, iron ladies and the plain ‘oi broken-hearted. Rounding out the rohicking broadly-talented brood backing the ace singer-composer-guitarist are vocalists Clive Gregson and Christine Collister, piano player Mitchell Froom (who has produc- ed three in a row for Thompson now) and the ubiquitous drum- ming giant fim Keltner. The song styles range from the disturbingly radio-friendly sound of Read About Loveto the simply disturbed yet marvelously mischievous Psycho Street, in which Thompson juxtaposes a darkly humorous series of psychotic episodes with a refrain drawn from the sunnier side of Penny Lane. Sinatra Reprise — The Very Good Years, Reprise Records 1991 This cat has got some more lives Design was a natural progression From page 22 Ireland said that working with the painter has been interesting because their artistic styles and mediums are quite different: Kunezynski never works three- dimensionally, while Ireland always does, and Kupezynski works primarily with human forms, while ireland said he has always stuck to animals and ar- cheiypal shapes. What they have in common is that both artists are more well known around the world than in their own backyard. Ireland said he sells only a small percentage of his work in Greater Vancouver. Primarily seen in 15 galleries and stores in western cities from Whitehorse to New Mexico, lreland’s work is sold through his own Sundog Studios Inc. and is available on the North Shore through Santa Fe Design Ltd. North-Shore raised, lzeland has been working with wood ever since he received a wood carving set from his mother when he was eight years old. Ireland first made a name for himself carving wooden signs. He built his compariy into one of the 10 best — for interesting and in- novative work — sign-makers in North America. treland said he had no real idea what he intended to do after get- ting out of the sign business, The move was an effart to stop being an administrator with 15 emloyees and become a designer again. “It was not satisfying to the soul,’’ he said, “‘! had to get out.” “i depend a lot on intuitica,” he added, saying he built a studio in the backyard of his Lynn Valley home without really knowing what he'd do init. But, once he‘d started making clocks, that led to mirror frames and furniture mak- ing and toa busy schedule of wood carving and designing. “The worst thing that could happen to me now is toc much success,” he said. Ireland wants the time to create new pieces, ex- plore ideas and develop images. Michael Becker RECORD REVIEW thanks to Harzy Connick Jr., Kitty Kelly’s paisen pen, the nasty things he’s said about Sinead O'Connor and several recent retrospective compilations of his life work. The collection offers 20 big ones for guys and gals tripping down memory lane, the thirty-something set itching for a taste of mom and dad’s dating soundtrack, and lovestruck lounge lizards every- where. it’s all here — the songs about chicks, ladies, ladies as tramps, big, glorious dirty old, my-kind-of towns like Chicago and New York, New York. Frank may represent the very antithesis of the politically-correct modern male, but hey, he swings and the big band backing him is super boss. BBC Concert Orchestra — ‘Still Life’ At The Penguin Cafe, The Decca Records Company 1990 There was 2 time in the 1980s when music by Penguin Cafe Or- chestra was liberally put to work as breezy sound bites used to wrap around public affairs pro- gramming on television and radio. Most of us are familiar with this wonderful music, although we may not have known the source. For this project, Penguin Cafe originator and composer Simon Jeffes has orchestrated pieces -~ originally written tor a configura- tion of violin, cello, guitar and piano — for a Royal Ballet sym- phonic project. The resulting two groups of music, ‘Still Life’ At The Penguin Cafe and Four Pieces For Orchestra, incorporate the seminal Penguin Cafe Orchestra songs. Teosight Apart The translation meets with mix- ed success. On several of the selections the joyous quirkiness that defined the original spirit of the music is muted in a sobering sea of strings. Yet others, such as with the case of Music For A Found Harmonium, tend to benefit by the sheer force of me- lodic will imposed by an orchestra in full stride. aennee YL) 6 kinds of Sushi: Tuna, Salmon, Octopus, Rea Snapper, Mackerel, Prawa Roll of Tekkz Tuna Roll Special Assorted Sushi ..........9.75 9 kinds of Sushi: Tuna, Salmon, Gciopus, Red Snapper, Mackerel Fresh Prawn,Yellow TailSea Eet Maki Sushi Combo .............6.00 1 Tekka Maki, 1 Kappa Maki, 1 Salmon Maki inside Out Roll Combo .... 1 California Roll, 1 BC.
