The seven per cent tax marks the first time some goods and most services have been taxed. The GST also replaces the hidden federal sales tax (FST) which has been charged at different rates: a 19 per cent tax on alcohol and tobacco products, a 13.5 per cent manufacturers’ sales tax, an 11 per cent telecom- munications tax and a nine per cent building materials tax. Removing the FST should, in theory, make some items such as cars, furniture and appliances cheaper next year.
