10 - Sunday, July 29, 1990 - North Shore News Streetcar study to be studied THE FINAL fate of Streetcar #153 will begin with a report to took at the feasibility of a feasibil- ity study. North Vancouver City Council deferred a motion to endorse a study on the car, asking for a staff report on the costs and time involved in its preparation and whether it should be a staff study or a consultant’s study. Councit also asked for input from the museum and archives committee. Ald. Barbara Sharp introduced a motion July 23 to study ‘‘the feasibility and costs associated with the implementation of the Streetcar #153 being placed back into full operating condition up and down Lonsdale.” Restoration on the heritage car is near completion, and the study could look at its best use, she said. Areas that should be covered include the logistics of laying track, alleviation or creation of parking problems, and the techno- logy involved in returning the car to service. “IT believe it can be cost effec- tive,"’ she said. Ald. Rod Clark, who suggested the deferral motion, said that while he didn’t support the study, he would ‘‘bow to” staff input on the question. There has been talk of the streetcar’s resurrection since the "60s, said Ald. Stella Jo Dean, who added two considerations to the equation: Lonsdale merchants have just finished paying for local im- provements and may not want to pay to have track installed up and down Lonsdale; @ and some cities, including San Francisco, have streetcars that run on wheels. But Mayor Jack Loucks ended discussion by saying there was no money in the budget this year for a “‘substantial study."” See hig trees NORTH Shore residents will have the opportunity Tuesday, July 31 te visit stands of old-growth western red cedar and enjoy a walk in the North Shore outdoors.
