poor focal skiing conditions on the
North Shore mountains are helping
to draw skiers to Blackcomb,

Perry estimates 75 to 80 per cent
of Blackcomb is open for business,
operating with 3,300 feet of ver-
tical skiing, nine lifts and two new
tegions — Crystal Ridge and
Blackcomb Glacier — open. Only

With an 84 cm base, Whistler
Mountain is also ‘‘fairly busy,”’
according to marketing manager
Cathy Dixon, but she said the
plight of the North Shore moun-
tains affects Whistler adversely.

“Whenever the skiing is good
locally, it) affects us positively,
believe it or not. When it’s bad
down there, everyone takes a
break,’’ Dixon said.

Whistler has 3,000 vertical feet
and four of five alpine bowls open,
but still needs 25 to 30 cm of snow
to open up the valley terrain for
skiing.
