Van goldsmith’s design is IN A world where everything — even jewelry — is mass produced, it’s nice to know there are still people like Rudi Peet around. By ELIZABETH COLLINGS News Reporter - Peet is a North Vancouver de- signer goldsmith who works out of his Gastown shop in The Landing at 375 Water Street. His dedication to designing and making quality jewelry recently paid off when he won the 1989 De Beers Diamonds Today contest. He was one of 22 award winners from across the country. Peet also won the award in 1985 with a design for a man’s ring which used a rare piece of meteor- : Phuto submitted RUDI PEET’S = award-winning design fer a lady’s ring features a wave of gold curving around a .45 carat round brilliant diamond. This time Peet’s winning piece is an 18 karat yellow gold lady’s ring with flowing lines around a single 0.45 carat brilliant-cut diamend. The design reflects the biomor- phic style of Peet. He prefers swirling lines, he said, because there are no straight lines on the human body. “If you put something angular on it, it will look very alien,’’ he said. a winner The goai of every Peet design is to suit the personality, lifestyle and physical appearance of the wearer. “Tam always looking for a way to enhance the person.’’ He wants the piece to be made for the person rather than having the person become a “‘billboard”’ for the piece, Peet said. “*I’'m not interested in building a monument to show off someone’s wealth.”’ From the conception of the design to the finished piece, Peet works ciosely with the customer. First he sits down with the client or couple to discuss designs. Peet even asks clients to bring in photos of the wearer he’s designing the piece for if he or she is not avail- able, to see what the person looks like. Peet then makes a mock-up ci the piece out of wax, copper or brass for the client to try on. Often he tells his clients not to be ‘too Canadian,’’ meaning polite, about the design. Peet said he wants his clients to leave con- -vinced they got the perfect design for therm. To this end, Peet has made as many as six models until both he and the client are satisfied. This process may sound expen- sive, but Peet insists it’s not. In Peet’s shop, he is the design- er, goldsmith and salesrsan wrap- ped into one. In larger stores, Peet said, the buyer ends up paying for the middiemer who take their cut. “I can come up with a compati- ble price with more choice,” Peet said. Moreover, Peet said the clients have the advantages of better ser- vice and of being involved in the actual creation of the piece. People shopping for goldsmiths are also not limited in their choice. Peet estimates that more than 30 goldsmiths work in Vancouver, an unusually large number for the ci- ty’s size. “Vancouver doesn’t realize how good they have it, how many goldsmiths they have.’ See Designer Page 15 “billboard”’ for jewelry.
