I’m sorry you didn’t make it as
our Reform Party candidate. I
would have voted for you. I must
admit, though, to a slight feeling
of unease when | heard you were
planning to run.

2 trouble is, a Jot of people
don’t really read what you write,
they read what they think you
write. When you defend free
speech, they think you are defen-
ding a particular cause. When you
defend good government they

The emergence of the Refo:
Party and the sprouting of Reform
signs on many North Van jawns is
a fascinating observation and gives

one pause for thought.

Though I do not personally
support some of this party’s views
or goals, it is stili interesting to

those who feel unrepresented or
abandoned by the various federal
Parties.

What interests me most is that it
is not just a bunch of right-wing
old blue-collar types who are sink-
ing their teeth into the phenome-
non but instead there appears to be
a variety of people expressing in-
terest in this party from a larger
cross-section of society than one
might at first think.

Western alienation, which ap-
Pears to have peaked in recent
years, and various sensitive federal
issues can provoke a wide variety
of pesple to rally around a cause
and although the flagpole they en-
circle may have more than one flag
at the top, it is still a focal point
for their frustrations and disen-
chantment and that is what makes
the beginnings of such a party in-
teresting.

Though the emergence of such
parties and their rather polarized
ideology may or may not amount
to much as the months go by, the
very fact that they are gathering
attention and may well score a
couplé of direct hits with a few
votes on election night should
drive a point home to the bigger
parties that perhaps it is time to
teach out again and bridge that
gap between west and east.

It seems to me that the media
would have had a field day. I can
just imagine the CBC: ‘‘Reform
Party chooses right wing, racist,
extremist,”’ and let’s face it, the
media can make or break a politi-
cal candidate. Mr. Manning had a
difficult decision to make.
Whether he took the best action is
a matter of opinion. But he did act
in what he saw as the best interests
of Western Canada.

I believe that we in the west des-
perately need a party to represent
us in Ottawa. The Liberals never

did, the Conservatives haven't,
and Ed Broadbent is too busy tak-
ing French lessons to worry about’
us. The Reform Party may not be
perfect, but they’re the best we’ve
got.

I don’t blame you for being hurt
by your rejection, but please
Doug, face up to it, what real
alternative have we got? Show us
you can be a good loser and sup-
port the party of the west.

In any case, there is one good
thing about all this. We'll still have
your columns to read.
