8 - Wednesday, October 26, 1988 - North Shore News FINAL LIST Candidates named shore ridings for N. A TOTAL of 16 candidates will be running in both North Shore federal ridings in the Nov. 21 federal elec- tion. By TIMOTHY RENSHAW News Reporter Following the Monday 2 p.m. candidate registration deadline, there were six candidates con- testing the Capilano-Howe Sound riding and 10 in the North Van- couver riding. Running in Capilano-Howe Sound will be incunitent Conser- vative MP Mary Collins, seeking her second term, Liberal candidate John Pozer, NDP candidate Olga Kempo, Bill Tomlinson of the Libertarian Party, Reform Party candidate Neil Thompson and “Alfred the Alien” for the Rhinoceros Party. Objections were raised Sunday by Capilano-Howe Sound Reform Party members who challenged the legality of the party’s second nomination meeting. Thompson, a member of the Reform Party's Capilano-Howe Sound executive, tendered his nomination after Reform Party leader Preston Manning refused Oct. 19 to approve News columnist Doug Collins’ nomination papers because of what Manning said was the party’s wish to distance itself from any “‘appearance”’ of racism. But Gustav Kroll said the second nomination meeting, held Sunday to elect a candidate before Mon- day’s deadline, was technically il- legal because, under the party’s _ constitution, the meeting required a minimum seven days notice. “If anybody wishes to set the meeting aside in a court of law, he would have no problem,” Kroli said. But Reform Party vice-chairman Gordon Shaw said Sunday’s meeting was a legally constituted “extraordinary meeting’. All members of the Capilano- Howe Sound association, he said, had been telephoned and told of the meeting prior to Sunday. Shaw added that Thompson’s nomination had been ‘‘99 per cent approved”? by the approximately 150 members attending Sunday’s meeting. _ He said he felt it was inappro- priate of Kroll, Collins’ agent in his original nomination, to challenge the second nomination meeting. No one should hold office by Acclamation — tax-payers and tesidents must have a CHOICE, to elect their representatives. 2.PUT A HANDLE ON TAXES! Yearly tax increases must stop — future taxes must be levied falrly on residential, commercial, & industrial properties, commen- surate with tax-payers’ ability to pay. 3. DEMAND HOME PURCHASE TAX BE REMOVED! Provincia! HOME PURCHASE TAX is both unfair & burdensome — it imposes great hardship on the citizens. 4. PUT SUITE JUSTICE (SUITE BYLAW) ON TOP OF THE AGENDA! a) Zoning on the basis of people use, as implemented by Mayor & Councii/87 — rather than building use, is a dangerous route to travel. NO ONE — not even the MAYOR, has a right to dic- tate, as to who is to live in the bedroom, the living room or the kitchen. b) Existing In-Law Suite (Illegal Suite Bylaw) smacks of prejudice — discrimination and is flawed in terms of enforcement. It brings hardship to unrelated good citizens and other deserving members of our society, and prevents them from legally occupying a dwell- ing unit — i.e. senior citizens, young couples, students and single-parents, c) Properly controlled suites in single-family homes, NEED NOT, affect the neighboring property values, and often do ease human & financial hardships, for both martgage-burdened home owners & lower income tenants, especially single parents. 5, IMMEDIATE CALL ON COUNCIL TO RECONSIDER & STOP BRAEMAR-DEMPSEY ROAD LINK PROJECT! Declare a moratorium on Braemar-Dempsey Link Project! Long- time Resident-Taxpayers deserve a priority consideration, and pro- tection of their amenities and their quality of life, over the new development. 6 SAVE OUR SHORES! (S.0.S.) - MAPLEWOOD FLATS With a projected population growth for the District to 100,000 from 70,000, 35,00 east of Seymour River) our shore must be vigorously protected from pollution & high density! (Did any of you swim in Deep Cove this summer?) 7. FORCEFUL PROTECTION OF ENVIRONMENT! a) By prosecution of polluters of our forests, waters, and air. b) Stop desecration of our forests! (Lip service is not enough) c) Our motto should be: "SAVE OUR FOREST — PLANT A TREE” 8. VIGOROUS CONTROL OF DENSITY! a) Intensified density destroys the District's high quality character to our present community and our quality of life; b)i shall not only listen to the cry of District citizens —- from Norgate to the Woodlands ... i SHALL HEAR YOU... 9. PUT TRAFFIC IMPROVEMENT ON FRONT BURNER a) Population growth brings traffic congestion (take a drive on Marine any afternoon — or talk to Norgate residents) And where are the improvement of Dollarton Highway and the over-passes of Lonsdale and Westview? b) immediate effort in conjunction with our sister cities & municipalities must be made in order to provide acequate transportation in a growing community; 10. SECAUSE, i AM CONCERNED FOR THE PRESERVATION of your and your children's life & the human race; and BECAUSE, ! love our Planet: | stand for the principle of: a) UNIVERSAL DISARMAMENT, and b) DECLARATION OF NUCLEAR FREE CANADA ZONE: Elected officials, be they grass root Municipal, or Provincial & Federal, they MUST mirror the concern of their people, be it in housing, transit, sewage, environment or disarmament! c) Indeed, it is heartfelt to know that the leaders of the world, are beginning to abandon the arms race (NOTE THE ‘‘I.N.F. TREA- TY") let us all give them a hand .. GO FORWARD WITH FAMINOW Give Peter your voto . wae - he will do the job!
