The 10-suite Lonsdale Manor apartment block at the southwest corner of Lonsdale and the Upper Levels Highway owned by George and Marjory Riste is the last building that must be removed be- fore construction on the overpass project can begin. : The project was announced in October 1985. Construction was scheduled to begin early last year. But George Riste said Friday he has refused to vacate the apart- ment until he gets assurances from the provincial government that he will get a building of equal quality and equal size to house his wife, himself and ail the tenants current- ly living in the building. He said he has also proposed the building be moved to another site in the City of North Vancouver. “A lot of the people living here are elderly ard on a fixed in- come,"* Riste said. ‘‘Where are they going to g0?"’ He said 50 per cent of the suites in the building are rented to peeple By TIMOTHY RENSHAW on fixed incomes on 4 non-profit basis. The provincial government, he said, had offered him another building farther north on Lonsdale that was of markedly inferior qual- ity. He rejecied the offer. Riste wrote to North Vancouver City Council on Sept. 29, 1986 re- questing the city approve moving the building from its 2429 Lons- dale site to a site at 2057 St. Georges Ave. But Mayor Jack Loucks said the building ‘‘did not conform to the zoning requirements in that area, and we don’t want to move a building into an area that is totally different from the buildings already there. Basically, we feel this is a highways problem.”” See Negotiations ENE OTN TES OEM CINE OE BPA Tpit peterpan t RET STEIN ES fas toppers , pA EN ORE Rg Suni oes MEDITATE NCL IN EES ane E RS BS ORIEN COLT OAT | SUBSCRIBE TO WIN 3 VOLUNTARILY subscribe to the North Shore News for one year and be eligible to win thousands of dollars worth of prizes.
