England is a land rich in past. By NANCY WEATHERLEY From ancient pubs that have ‘housed highwaymen and hidden royalists to wind- blown.. abandoned castles, the countryside is full of his- tory. And for the visitor sear- ching for more of England than double-decker buses and fish and chips there is a wealth. of interesting tourist pastimes. One which has gained England’s brasses reveal history considerable popularity in recent years is brass rubbing. Church brasses, which were originally made to glo- ify the dead, now give the visitor clues to Britain’s past as well as the means to at- tractive wall hangings. Brass rubbing supplies are readily available. All you need is a roll of black paper, a rubbing stick (available in silver, gold, and white), scissors, tape and lots of elbow grease. Choose a brass — they range from very tiny figures to sizes that are bigger than life; the more detail and bet- Senn tip. Beni i “aM ahaa ona pata i Ay rece TEED OY IS og JOAN BROCAS, 1487. First feel the outline with the fingers then follow the line with the rubbing stick. After the outline is drawn press heavily on the stick and keep rubbing. It is much like crayoning inside the lines of a coloring book — you must take care not to draw outside the lines and you have to keep a steady pressure and rhythm so there are no light patches or spaces. Depending on the size of the brass, the rubbing takes between half an hour and an hour. Before beginning check with the church for permis- sion. Most charge for a permit, and some _ brasses, worn down from years of rubbing, are no longer available. If you're short of time or don’t like the idea of kneel- ing on a cold, stone church floor for an hour, there are lots of brass rubbing centres with replicas of the real thing. They'll provide the visitor with materials and in- struction for a low price. Church brasses are beautiful to look at, give in- teresting details of past costume and tradition and the rubbings make unique souvenirs of a stay in histor- ic Britain. _ Go where you please in a Volkswagen Westfalia Camper.
