Home Handyman Hint

To avoid splintering wood -
while drilling or boring?

Often when drilling wood with
a hand drill, electric drill or drill
press the wood will splinter as
the hole is going through the
far side. Similarly boring with
a brace and bit. To avoid
splintering, drill or bore
through just to the place where
the point only is through - then
dritl from the opposite side.
While Planing - on end grain,
plane from both edges to the
centre or chisel a corner off
the end grain on the waste
‘ side then plane towards the
chiselled - off corner. On sur-
face grain, gently feel for direc-
tion of grain and plane with the
grain.
While Sawing as final saw
strokes are made, hold cut-off
piece to prevent it splintering
good stock.
