I] was a good hater, you see. But time is not only a healer. It’s a teacher It's now almost 40 years on, and we should stop mak- ing villains of the Germans To paraphrase Churchill, there can be no other instance in history where so many people have been subjected to so much vilificauion for so long. And if such a thing happened to anyone else — East Indians, for instance — there’d be hell to pay. The Second World War is the jongest-running movie of all, and it’s time for a change of program. That doesn’t mean we should forget the sacrifices that were made But: 1 am tured of seeing bemonocled hell-clicking Nazi officers saluting one another as if the Fuehrer were about to jump out from behind a curtain and make another speech. |! am tired of seeing those clips of the Brownshirts mar- ching down Unter den Linden in that torchlight pro- cession. It crops up in every documentary on the Nazi regime. And there are almost as many such documentaries as there were torches. lam tired of the concentra- uon camp stuff and tired of hearing about war criminals and the trials of war criminals. | am also tired of Simon Wiesenthal the Nazi- hunter. Forty years of Nazi- hunting is a hell of a lot of hunting, and the guy should find another job. Anyone would think that the /sraelis have never been guilty of any war crimes. It’s time we lifted the cross of guilt from the backs of German generations that are no more responsible for what happened between 1939 and 194S than your seven-year- old tad 1s.
