Mr. Collins is wrong in saying Natives have no rights to the lands they have always cared for because, ‘‘We stole it fair and square.’’ There is no provi- sion for such an outrageous argument in either British Legal tradition or in the Canadian Constitution. Hitler made such a claim when he invaded Poland in 1939. Fortunately, the Government of Canada takes a more enlightened position. It recognizes the historical relationship it has to the First Nations. Remarks like those of Mr. Collins are ignorant and racist.. | urge you to. recon- sider providing a forum for such ill informed opionion. Prompt efficiency Dear Editor: Perhaps Mr. Gibbs would like to hear a first hand teport of another incident relative to the efficiency of the District fire department, about which he complains so bitterly. ; Some time ago | suffered a medical emergency requiring the urgent dispatch of an am- bulance. The fire depart- ment, who had apparently monitored the ambulance call, dispatched a fire engine from the Montroyal Hall, which arrived within minutes, and the firemen were already at work when the ambulance crew arrived and took over. ] am sure that if Mr. Gibbs had been the recipient of such prompt, efficient and sym- pathetic service from our fire department he would not have written the acid letter you published. On my release from hospital it was my intention to visit the Montroyal fire hall and personally thank them for the great help they rendered, but as with so many good intentions I| did not do so. | wish to correct that ommission now. Chicken droppings have some value Dear Editor: Good heavens! man Gadsby ts concerned about the ‘‘potential for health problems, odor and noise at daybreak’’, posed by the keeping of chickens, she should put some energy into the enforcement of bylaws concerning dog mess on the sidewalks and public areas } can think of no useful purpose for the mounds of debris left by our neighbourhood dogs often encouraged by their owners Chicken droppings at least are worth theu weight as If Alder- manure and all chicken owners | know take care to keep their runs clean and dig the resultant droppings into garden and compost heaps.
