HEAVY FALL showers can
create deep puddles and areas
of standing water on roads
which can make driving
hazardous. It also can result
in a swamped engine if the
car is driven too fast through
the water. The Automotive
Information Council (AIC)
offers the following
suggestions:

Do not attempt to cross a
puddle if the water is higher
than the bottom of the wheel
rims. Shift into low gear and
go through slowly.

Driving through a large
puddle at a high rate of speed
can throw water up into the
engine compartment. This
can cause the car to stall.

than five miles per hour.

If you cross a deep puddle
and the car stalls out, try to
coast to the side of the road.
Wait for the engine to dry out
before trying to start the car.

Remember that after mov-
ing through water or after
driving through a_ heavy
storm, your car’s brakes may
have lost stopping power.
When traffic permits, pump
the brakes a few times slight-
ly to dry the brake linings.
Remember to allow. extra
stopping distance until you

to full performance.
