Al0 - Wednesday, October 26, 1983 - North Shore News inquiring reporter by Ellsworth Dickson Virtually every newsstand in Canada and the United States has a number of ‘‘exposé’’ magazines and newspapers. A couple of the more well-known ones are ‘‘People’’ and “*Us’’, where the intimate details of celebrities are bared for public scrutiny. Are these Magazines successful because people love ‘dirty laundry’ or are they harmless and entertaining? Today’s question is: ’‘What do you think of so-called ‘exposé’ magazines?’’ Robin Morgan North Vancouver I enjoy reading ‘‘People’’ magazine, not to discover other people’s problems, but to keep up with the entertainment and music industry. | am very interested in the pop music scene and the people involved. There are also interesting stories on the new movies. Tom McQuarrie North Vancouver 1 have bought them on occasion. 1! think it is human nature to want to poke into other people’s lives. The magazines also show a glamorous side of life which is kind of escapism. Margaret Carroll North Vancouver Those kind of Magazines are successful because people are attracted to gossip. | have to admit that 1 **People’’ magazine buy Carol Anderson North Vancouver I don’t buy them, but | have a peck a boo look at them at the supermarket check out counter Tt ts the scnsatvional headlines that catch your cye | wouldn't be Caught dead buying onc Cathy Jones North Vancouver | think capase magazines are trashy and | don't buy them LE think so many tssucs are sold because they are mindless escapism City hits plans fo axe buses A THIRD SEABUS will likely be ferrying people to Vancouver and back by 1986, but there will be less, and more inconvenient, bus service across the Lions Gate Bridge, senior B.C. Transit staff told North Vancouver City council Monday night. Transit staff appeared before council’s policy com- mittee to explain why they were recommending that two North Vancouver bus routes be abandoned and two others be made more inconvenient. But the policy committee didn’t buy Transit’s reason- ing, and voted to tell the Lower Mainland Transit Commission that the City op- poses any cutbacks to the North Vancouver service. The plan to cut service has already been approved by the commission once, but the commission will have to give its okay once more before it can be implemented, on April 1, 1984. Transit wants to eliminate the St. Georges and Chester- field routes becuae they are not used very much and duplicate service is available one block away on Losndale Avenue. Another part of the plan is to make it more inconvenient for people on Lonsdale to cross the Lions Gate Bridge by bus to ‘‘force’’ them to use the Seabus, in the words of B.C. Transit staff member Glen Lester. Anyone wanting to travel to Vancouver via the bridge would have to transfer at 15th and Lonsdale, Lester said. He said the Seabus is underused on weekends, in the middle of the day and in the evenings. ‘‘We’re making it a little less attractive to use the alternate route,’’ he said. Council members lam- basted the arguments put for- ward by Lester and his superior, Larry Ward. Ald. Raiph Hall said ‘‘It’s almost as if you don’t want to run that service.’” Ald. Gary Payne said it would be better to provide a good service that would en- courage ridership, rather than cutting service because nobody uses it. Transit’s pro- posal would save them $750,000 in the short run, but would jeopardize the future, Payne warned. Ward admitted that B.C. Transit expects to lose 100,000 riders a year.
