C2 - Sunday, May 15, 1983 - North Shore News Fitness is the t The week of May 15th to the 23rd has been officially proclaimed as National Physical Activity Week. ‘Canadians have discovered the importance of being physically fit, so much so, that an estimated 10,000,000 Canadians in 1,000 different communities across Canada will par- ticipate in NPAW”, said Ms. Bev Greene, National Coordinator for NPAW on behalf of Senator Ray Perrault, the Minister of Fitness and Amateur Sport. “Thirty years ago NPAW would not have been possible,” said Ms. Greene. “The legend of the average 60-year-old Swede being in better condition than a 30- year-old Canadian is no longer true.” Ms. Greene was speaking at. a press conference ‘outlining the aims = and objectives of NPAW. For the past two years Fitness Canada, a Fitness and Amateur Sport Directorate, has worked with both provincial and municipal governments, members of Canadian in- dustry, and health and fit- hess associations to create what is to be an annual event. Information about events taking place in the Van- couver area can be obtained from community centres, municipal recreation departments, or from the YM-YWCA. “NPAW will be a celebration of physical fitness; it’s a time to express our pride as Canadians in the nation’s growing awareness of the benefits of physical activity,” stated Ms. Green. on you!
