Al4 - Sanday News, D December 20, 1981 FIRE CHIEF'S ANNUAL MESSAGE Have asa FESTIVE celebrations make Christmas one of the more hazardous times of the year as far as fire dangers are concerned and fire departments are urging North Shore residents to take precautions. “Let’s make sure the only visitor arriving at your house m a red vehicle this year is Santa Claus,” says North Vancouver City Fire Chief Dick Hallaway. In his Christmas message, Hallaway urges caution in planning festivities. He warns families not to leave children unattended and not to buy them com- bustible toys or ones which use flammable liquids. Electrical toys should be labelled CSA (Canadian Standards Association). Trees should be cut. off on an angie one inch from the bottom and kept immersed in water. They should not be near a heat source or blocking escape routes. Christmas lights should also be CSA approved and ones used in previous years should be checked for wear. Lights should not be used on ’ metallic trees. and extension cords running under rugs are also considered a hazard. Care should be taken that electrical circuits are not overloaded. Only lights specifically designed for the purpose should be used outdgors and should be unplugged when occupants leave the house or go to bed. Hallaway urges the use of flame retardant or non- combustible decorations for Christmas parties. Don't smoke near the tree or decorations, he says,-adding that matches should be kept beyond the reach of children and that upholstered fur- niture should be checked for cigarette butts at the end of the evening. The only safe place to empty ashtrays, he says, is down. the.toilet. Smoke detectors are items the fire chief likes to see on any presents lists — as long ~ as they are ULC (Un- derwriters Laboratory of Canada) approved ones. And for those who have installed or are thinking of installing a solid fuet burning appliance, he reminds that a permit must be obtained from municipal hall. Chimneys should be kept clean, he says, adding that further information on in- stallation of these units can Shoppers say they're cutting back FROM PAGE Ai — respondents would actually be giving less in terms of 1980 dollars. The survey results also destroy the myth of “wealthy” West Vancouver when it comes to Christmas giving. The findings of the survey reflect the relatively sub- dued Christmas shopping which has had local mer- chants edgy during the first half of the month. But with four shopping days still left, there remains plenty of temptation - to break ‘‘spend ltess’’ resolutions. North “Shore _ stores are hoping for a panic buying spree between now and Thursday evening — and you could still wind up with more goodies under the Christmas tree than the survey suggests. 14.95 14.95 New Westminster Mati The Coquitiam Centre 631 Lansdowne Park, Ricnmona 4664 Lougheed Highway.
